Reflecting on Digital Design and Usability in My Mastery Journey

Updated: Jul 6

As part of my Master’s program at Full Sail University, the Digital Design and Usability course has been a transformative experience, enhancing my understanding of creating intuitive and user-centered designs. This course directly aligns with my Mastery: PDL timeline goal of elevating my professional capabilities in the digital marketing and brand strategy landscapes.

This course expanded my expertise in usability testing and design thinking. It reinforced the importance of understanding user behavior, not just from an analytical perspective but also through empathetic observation. These skills are critical in crafting marketing strategies and creating content that resonates with target audiences.

Two of our assignments really resonated with me:

1. Design a User-Centered Digital Experience

Assignment: Usability Test. In This assignment, I conducted usability tests to identify pain points and areas for improvement on a professional website. The process involved creating test scenarios, engaging users, and analyzing results to recommend actionable design enhancements. I learned how user feedback can be the cornerstone of iterative design, ensuring websites meet real-world user needs. Professionally, this has deepened my ability to advocate for user-centric solutions in client projects.

2. Apply Digital Design Principles to Solve Problems

Assignment: Identifying Primary Tasks and Usability Testing

Understanding the primary tasks of JTigerProductions.com users and testing these functionalities offered practical insights into how design choices affect usability. This exercise taught me to balance aesthetics with functionality, ensuring that users can efficiently achieve their goals. Moving forward, I’ll use these principles to optimize digital campaigns and maintain good alignment with client objectives. I plan to incorporate these learnings into my professional projects by:

  1. Conducting usability tests for client websites and digital assets.

  2. Applying iterative design processes to enhance user satisfaction and conversions.

  3. Advocating for data-driven design decisions to build compelling digital experiences.

The Digital Design and Usability course has empowered me to view design through a user-focused lens, bridging the gap between functionality and creativity. These skills are essential for my journey as a digital marketing strategist, ensuring I deliver results that are both impactful and user-friendly.
